FIND YOUR ACADEMIC FIT

Build a balanced US university shortlist

US admissions and funding decisions are institution-specific. Pakistani applicants should compare course content, academic expectations, campus setting, accreditation and the net cost after confirmed awards. A balanced shortlist includes options that fit both your profile and your budget.

Bachelor’s degrees

A US bachelor’s degree typically involves around four years of full-time study. Check major requirements and the flexibility to explore other subjects.

Community college transfer

Some students follow a two-year college plus university transfer route. Verify credit transfer and the receiving institution’s requirements before committing.

Graduate & research study

Compare taught or research focus, faculty fit, entry requirements and the availability of any assistantship or other funding.

Study interests to explore

  • Computer science
  • Engineering
  • Business
  • Natural sciences
  • Liberal arts
  • Research programmes

PREPARE A STRONG APPLICATION

Entry requirements & application documents

Requirements can include transcripts, essays or statements, references, English evidence and programme-specific materials. SAT, ACT, GRE or GMAT policies vary, so check the current requirements of every institution and course instead of assuming a test is always required or always waived.

  • Prepare your passport, complete academic record and any evaluation or translation required by the institution.
  • Plan essays, references, a CV, portfolio or research statement around the chosen programme.
  • Verify accepted English evidence and the institution’s current standardised-test policy.
  • Check admissions and funding deadlines separately, then review any offer, financial certification and enrolment conditions.
PLAN THE COMPLETE BUDGET

Tuition fees & living costs in the USA

Compare each institution’s published cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, housing, meals, insurance, books and personal expenses. Use the net cost after confirmed institutional funding. A scholarship or assistantship offer should state what it covers, how long it lasts and what you must do to retain it.

Plan your budget in USD · US dollars
  • Compare the cost for the complete degree, allowing for changes in annual fees and exchange rates.
  • Include application and testing expenses, visa-related charges, travel and an initial-arrival reserve.
  • Check whether health insurance and on-campus accommodation are compulsory or optional.
  • Treat competitive scholarships and assistantships as unconfirmed until the institution issues an award.
UNDERSTAND YOUR PERMISSION

F-1 student visa, campus work & practical training

For the F-1 route, choose a SEVP-approved school and obtain Form I-20 after meeting its requirements. Follow the official process for the I-901 SEVIS fee, DS-160 application and visa interview, with your academic and financial evidence. Admission does not guarantee a visa or entry.

Working during your studies

Eligible F-1 students may generally work on campus for up to 20 hours a week while school is in session. Off-campus work needs the appropriate eligibility and authorisation; ordinary student status is not permission to take any job. Discuss employment and training with the school’s designated school official (DSO).

After graduation

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a separate, authorised form of training related to the degree. An eligible graduate may have an initial OPT period, usually up to 12 months, and qualifying STEM graduates may apply for a further 24-month extension. Programme, employer and reporting requirements apply; approval is not automatic.

CURRENT PLANNING NOTE

Check academic and financial fit together

For a 2027 intake, keep the university’s admissions deadline, scholarship deadline and I-20 financial requirements in the same plan. Published visa appointment availability and processing times can change.

FAQs about studying in the USA

Practical answers for your next study decision, with guidance from IPF Abroad.

Is SAT or GRE compulsory for every US university?

No single test policy covers all institutions. Requirements differ by degree, department and admissions cycle. Check your selected course’s current policy, including whether a test is optional, required or not considered.

Can I pay my tuition through a part-time job?

Build a funding plan that does not depend on getting work. F-1 employment is restricted, and eligible on-campus work during school sessions is generally limited to 20 hours per week.

Does every STEM course guarantee three years of work?

No. OPT and the STEM extension have eligibility and authorisation requirements. The programme must qualify, and other conditions, including employer and reporting obligations, apply. Confirm the exact course with the DSO.

What does an I-20 mean?

Form I-20 is issued by an eligible school after its requirements are met and is part of the F-1 process. It does not by itself grant a visa or permission to enter the United States.

How can IPF Abroad help me build a US university shortlist?

IPF Abroad can help you compare academic fit, entry criteria, accreditation, programme structure, location and the complete cost after confirmed funding. Keep the shortlist focused on institutions suitable for your profile.

What should I ask about a community college transfer route?

Check the intended receiving university, transfer conditions and how credits would count toward the final degree. IPF Abroad can help you identify questions to confirm in writing before relying on a transfer plan.

How should I compare public and private US institutions?

Compare the actual course, international tuition, housing and confirmed funding offered to you. IPF Abroad can help you avoid assuming that the institution category alone determines the total cost.

What financial evidence should I prepare for an I-20?

Follow the school’s current financial certification instructions and the evidence relevant to your circumstances. IPF Abroad can help you organise the documents and distinguish the school’s requirements from the visa application steps.

What if US application and scholarship deadlines differ?

Keep both deadlines in the same timetable and check whether the scholarship requires a separate application. IPF Abroad can help you plan documents and submissions for your selected institutions.

How can I start a US study enquiry with IPF Abroad?

Use the USA enquiry form on this page. IPF Abroad can follow up about your academic background, intended subject, intake and budget to discuss suitable next steps.
